Call it a 'road to recovery', but when some people counted them out as being the next brand to leave the US market, Mitsubishi posts a double digit percentage sales increase year-over-year in 2014.
Overall Mitsubishi US sales were up 24.8% over 2013 sales, selling !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! cars and crossovers in 2014, outselling MINI (which sold 56,112 in 2014), who outsold Mitsubishi in 2013, 66,502 (MINI) t0 62,227 (Mitsubishi).
That means Mitsubishi sold over 15,000 more vehicles in the US than they did in '13.
Individual model sales for 2014 and increases/decreases are as follow:
Mirage: 16,708 in 2014 to 2,935 in 2014 - an increase of 13,773
Outlander: 13,068 in 2014 to 12,287 in 2013 - an increase of 781
Outlander Sport: 31,054 in 2014 to 24,951 in 2013 - an increase of 6,103
i MiEV: 196 in 2014 to 1,029 in 2013 - a decrease of 833
Lancer (including Sportback and Evolution): 16,945 in 2014 to 19,451 in 2013 - a decrease of 2,506
So, based on these sales numbers, the Outlander is holding rather steady, the Outlander Sport and Mirage are hot sellers, the Lancer is starting to slow down, and the i MiEV is practically smoldering ashes as this point.
Oh, and Mitsubishi still had Galants to sell in the early part of the year, selling the last 122 officially counted by the end of March.

I'd say that relying on the Mirage is a bit of a scary tactic. There's a lot of other cars out there for slightly more that offer a lot more, from what I hear.

It certainly is a scary tactic, though when they have that as a bit of a buffer, and the pretty decent Outlander Sport, which Mitsubishi can use the whole 'Made in America' bit as a selling point, it could be a good start to help them get to the points of future product that the brand wants to bring here.

Pretty much, it's like they had just enough to allow themselves to spring back to life.
Hopefully this will mean more good things for them in the future.

I know. It's a shame that the fact that Subaru is keeping the WRX STI alive and well can't seem to convince Mitsubishi to keep it alive, especially when that and the regular WRX have great competition from Ford and VW, plus the Focus RS coming soon.
I just hope Mitsubishi has enough planned in the near future that can do more than keep them alive here in the US.

It would be nice to see them survive. It's always sad to hear when a company goes down (unless they deserve it). It does seem like Mitsubishi is capable of some decent work, but I do worry about their longevity. The Outlander does have quite a bit to compete against, and they've got a bit of an uphill battle at this point.

The Outlander and Outlander Sport are still decently competitive. The Lancer is begging for a redesign, as was the Galant before they finally allowed to to just die.

That is true.
Now, Mitsubishi does have a Galant replacement in their plans, so they'll likely return to the midsize market in the near future.
As for a Lancer replacement...who knows.
